The Complaint:
My 80 year old mom owns a multiple dwelling (5 units) in The Bronx which is not under any rent control. Today, one of her long time tenants (17 years, no lease, month-to-month) moved out without any notice. He knocked on her door and handed her the keys and said to use his security deposit for the rent for December (which was past due) and he quickly ran out. When we inspected the apartment we found it was filthy beyond belief. The kitchen and bathroom will have to be practically gutted and rebuilt because the abuse and damage is so bad. Lots of mold and mildew. The appliances are ruined too. He also left a lot of junk and furniture in the apartment. At the very least, my mom wants him to clean out the apartment and pay her the rent that is due. His security deposit ($475) will not even begin to pay for the damages he caused. Do not rent to this guy!
